/r/keurig is filled with “My Keurig brewer stopped working” posts, and there’s no way to fix these things.
At best, Keurig ships a whole new appliance, and the old one goes into landfill.
The new one breaks in a couple of months as well, and joins the old one in the city dump.
What a waste.
Another thing to consider is how bulky your coffee gadgets are.
I don’t have space for a dedicated drip brewer.
I had an opportunity to buy a siphon brewer from a thrift store, but I decided against it, because I have nowhere to store a large delicate glass thing.
I use 3 coffee brewers in rotation.
All 3 brewes are quick and easy because I have a hot water pot that keeps some water at 195F/90.5C, and can get up to boiling 212F/100C in a couple of minutes.
I think this is the most critical part for me trying to get out the door to work in the morning, because who likes to wait for water to boil?
French press - Cheap and easy to find: Usually brew 4 minutes, but that can vary with the beans.
Aeropress - So quick and satisfying to use. Brews nice and smooth compared to my French press, but I like both brews. Some recipes call for brewing as little as 10 seconds, so it’s even quicker than the French press.
Cucumella - Italian flip over coffee brewer makes a smaller, but stronger cup, about 2 minutes for all the water to drip through the grounds in my tiny 1-2 cups device
I also have a Baratza Encore grinder, but I think store bought grounds are just fine.
I grind a week’s worth of grounds at a time in my Baratza Encore.
I have a small disposable brush whose handle I have bent to reach into the chute and sweep out the clinging clumps of grounds.
Spritzing the beans, or at least dipping my fingers into water and swirling them around in the whole beans before grinding doesn’t seem to help.
Unless your sidewalks are made of gypsum.
Wow, so 20,000 people read this?
Lemmy’s more popular than I thought.
Sidewalk chalk isn’t made of chalk anymore?
TIL: It’s made of calcium sulfate, i.e. gypsum, the same stuff that goes into drywall, as opposed to calcium carbonate, i.e. rock chalk.
There are still plenty of mediocre and meh instant coffees out there though, e.g. Dollar store instant, supermarket house brands, I hated Bustelo instant, (Israeli) Elite.
I didn’t like the much-ballyhooed Dutch Douwe Egberts, nor the Japanese UCC and Blendy instants either.
Nescafe Clasico and Tasters Choice taste good, but are offset by Nestle being a classic evil corporation
My favorite least harmful choice wound up being Colcafe Instant from Colombia. Smooth and flavorful.
Well, all that was before I started drinking brewed coffee…
It looks like any type of brewing except boiled, and whatever the hell those two espresso datapoints were, are fine.
Only buy cheese that’s low in cafestol…
Just like mom used to make!
Well those are true… from a certain point of view.
Okay, but what does the duck mean?
AI knows how they interacted with humans…
Free dice bags!
But ideally, you will want to take your fresh roasted beans home ASAP, and transfer them to an airtight bag, like an old vented coffee bag, to reduce exposure to air.
San Francisco Bay Area is about as specific as I want to get.
There’s historically a lot of ethnic Italians in the area, so having Italian stuff pop up isn’t surprising.
Yeah, at first glance I thought this was some kind of overbuilt powdered sugar or cocoa shaker.
Ilsa does make those too, like this one
