I’m very, very happy with the 9800X3D, so you can save yourself a bit of cash there to put towards the GPU. With a fast modern CPU like that, you might even consider an Intel B580 to relieve that GPU bottleneck.

I’m sorry, now we’re not just simulating rays to trace, we’re emulating simulating rays to trace? How is that more efficient?! Computer science == warlockry, change my mind.
Take the following with a boulder of salt as I haven’t even finished a single campaign yet, but:
I’ve found it a lot slower than even most of the 4X games I’ve played. It seems much more story- and exploration-focused than Master of Orion or anything like Starcraft; there are a great many cool things to find on the map. Diplomacy is your main path to victory, military conquest seems almost discouraged. To actually conquer worlds you invade, you have to assert a claim beforehand. Simply flooding the system with troops and ships and killing everything that isn’t your empire doesn’t work for some reason.
It was fine, but I don’t think I really understand it. If you’re after recommendations, though, do you like The Expanse? You might like Starsector, if yes and you haven’t played it.
I stand corrected, this speaks to my robot soul
“Polished” is a generous word for it. I think you might be mistaking generic plastic gloss for polish, though. AI writing is so formulaic, it’s like looking at a repeating texture in a video game. It writes lyrics like a five year old, too - very simple, entirely conventional, no creativity. Nothing new.
Imagine being Bobby Kotick and genuinely believing your reputation can be harmed by anyone saying negative things. Actions speak louder than words, Bobby buddy, and we all think you’re an arsehole because of what you’ve done, not because someone told us to.
Here’s how you know it’s not ready: AI hasn’t replaced a single CEO.
I understand, I was in exactly the same position. Then my battery swelled and wouldn’t hold a charge at all, so I couldn’t restore anything anyway, and my last backup was inaccessible (I know I know, test your backups, but like I started this post with I’m in the same boat of all work and no time for me).
Losing everything was remarkably freeing. Just switch all your 2FA to Aegis as has been suggested, and save anything you want to back up over the wire, then take the plunge. You won’t lose everything like I had to, and you won’t regret the switch 😊
antithetical to the spirit of silicon valley
Tell me you haven’t been paying attention without telling me you haven’t been paying attention.
I’m not the one who asked but thank you for summarising! It’s late here and I’m too tired for a whole video, so this helped me. Those results are interesting. I’ve been planning on switching from Windows to Linux as my main OS; last time I tried was before the latest AM5/RDNA4 drivers were integrated, so I had terrible instability like Plasma crashing all the time and occasional lockups. I installed Windows 11 so I could at least get my work done, but if my environment can stay stable then it might be time to finish the move.
And how much did it cost? The whole thing, I mean. Must people who buy a game want to play the content so the price of said content should be included. Somewhere in the region of $1000, isn’t it?
I believed in Chris Roberts because of Freelancer and backed it on Kickstarter, and have watched from the shadows as the story has unfolded. I occasionally dipped my toes in to see how it was coming along, but the performance was awful on midline hardware so I put it back down and waited. Now that the turmoil at the top has come out and people are leaving, I don’t hold much hope for the future of the game.
I think the reason it gets a ton of hate is that Roberts had gone and proven that Microsoft were absolutely right to take Freelancer away from him so it could get finished. They weren’t shackling a maverick genius, they were mitigating losses from his poor leadership.
Maybe check out Starsector by https://fractalsoftworks.com. It’s written in Java so it runs on basically anything, and it’s 2d top-down but the detail on the ships is great. I love this game very much because it scratches most of the itches I was hoping for from Star Citizen.
Came here to suggest it and here it is, the newest comment! The modding scene is insane, too, for such a relatively small and unknown game.
I love Starsector. I just wish it was written in something more performant than fuckin’ Java. But, if it were, there probably wouldn’t be the mods for it there are today.
One of these days, I’m going to get around to writing a quest line of my own. Honest.
In revenge for reminding me of Frontpage I will also mention Dreamweaver
Small business owners learning about word2html.net for the first time…
I’m just saying, this is an arms race and nobody will win.
Yes, it works fine on the Deck! I find the controls less convenient than kbm, but that might just be me; everything you need is mapped and it feels quite intuitive after a bit.
It’s good on Deck? I was waiting for a sale, but not anymore.
Edit: It’s on sale for release, perfect 😁

NH-D15 is default for me. Incredible performance, whisper-quiet. And if you need new brackets for an upgrade, the company will supply them free of charge!
When you tear down next, look for missing board components or any that lean at an angle they’re not supposed to. Canned air has been known to shear poorly-attached caps or whathaveyou clean off the board. Or maybe one of the wires in the 12v cable is broken and it’s delivering power just to most pins… The paperclip test just tells you if the PSU is dead dead, are you able to test with a multimeter instead?
Buzzing while the power supply is off makes me wonder if there’s literal bugs in it, if it’s buzzing while it’s unplugged. I suppose the buzzing could also be remaining power discharging, if it happens just after it’s been unplugged.
Very nice, that’s a great chip! I’m excited for you, enjoy the new rig 😊
