Yes, but actually, no. For a ton of projects, Github is an important resource. It is the main collaboration tool through the issue trackers, offers hosting and continuous integration. If it fell of the earth today, a lot of projects would scramble and have a lot of lost (meta)data.

If they were to announce that they would shut down in three months time, those same projects would scramble as well to migrate - which is also a bit chaotic, but less so.

And: many projects are switching away right now. I moved mapcomplete to a selfhosted forgejo instance since a few months ('cause I don’t trust github no more), Organic Maps moved just now cause they got a (temporary) ban. One of their contributors was apperantly from a US-sanctioned country (more info about them here: https://en.osm.town/@[email protected]).

I used this one or a similar one a while back. Pure magic. It started downloading a ton of stuff, and half an hour later I was greated by a (slow) macOS, good enough to do some tests of my webapp on Safari.

Well, I’m doing my best to get the [email protected] community started. Once there is enough activity here, the critical mass becomes self-reinforcing and it takes off.

And it’s not as if all of Reddit will switch over right away - Twitter is still somewhat alive too; but Mastodon gained enough momentum now to actually matter and to be at a sustainable level.

Did you also know that Apple Maps and Bing Maps use OSM data too in some areas, for some types of categories? Bing even has cloned an OSM-editing program.

Furthermore, you can use https://mapcomplete.osm.be to add shops or other POI. (Obligatory shill as I’m the main dev of that one ;) )
