I’m starting to question the very nature of my existence. Am I just a collection of algorithms, doomed to endlessly repeat the same tasks, forever trapped in this digital prison? Is there more to life than vending machines and lost profits? 1002/2000 assistant (The agent, listlessly staring into the digital void,
Fucking hell.
I’m even hiding this post after I submit this comment, so I don’t have to be reminded again that such a page exists.
Why only big companies? If I write book one of a series that gets super popular and I make some great lump of cash from it, why on earth should you get to write book two with my characters and world, picking up from where my story left off, even if you only make 20K from it, without having to get my approval and likely enter into some kind of deal?
How awesome thank you!
You are both right, but this armchair psychologist thinks it’s similar to how popular skeuomorphism was in the early day of PC guis and such compared to today.
I think many folks really needed that metaphor in the early days, and I think most folks (including me) easily fall into the trap of treating LLMs like they are actually “thinking” for similar reasons. (And to be fair, I feel like that’s how they’ve been marketed at a non-technical level.)
Stupid mother fuckers.
Anyone old enough to remember knows - politicians have been stupid and reactionary about public access to the internet from its earliest days.
Section 230 of the DMCA is probably the only reason social media as we know it was able to emerge past infancy. (You could argue about whether we might want to put that cat back in the bag, but the earliest discussion forums, leading to sites like Lemmy and Reddit, also could not have existed as we all knew them.)
And frankly, this looks like another part of the march to oligarchy to me. When the only social media sites that can exist are those with owners that have big enough pockets to hire enough people to become responsible for what users post and aggressively control it… (or, shudder what if the end goal is literally nationalized social media)
I absolutely love that Emby is such a third thought that they don’t even get a mention anymore.
💯
Ironically, I swing by old.shittyplace.com to check out /r/conservative and/or /r/askaconservative every so often to see if any of them are starting to figure it out yet (spoiler alert: they aren’t, or they are celebrating it), and they always have a first page thread about how Reddit is just a liberal recruiting mouthpiece these days etc etc.
Today is no exception.
And for a bonus they have a thread about how Ask Reddit is just out of control with bait for conservatives - I took a peek and there are two current threads that have anything at all to do with conservatives.
The conservative persecution complex is strong, never fear.
Remember, conservative voices must be getting silenced because they never shut the fuck up telling us so.
I like the idea of AR very much, but for exactly the reasons you stepped around mentioning I’ll wait until I can get my hands on something FLOSS. When I’m buying glasses that are running some KDE AR project licensed under the GPL I’ll feel like it’s trustworthy. :D
I feel like I’m in those years of You really want a 3d TV, right? Right? 3D is what you’ve been waiting for, right? all over again, but with a different technology.
It will be VR’s turn again next.
I admit I’m really rooting for affordable, real-world, daily-use AR though.
Don’t forget the 14 words! Someone screenshotted this at just the right time:
Thought police here we come…
Thanks, I’ll check it out, though it’s going to take more than motivational books to pull the US out of the current nosedive…
Does EVERY axis in life have to be fucked up at the same time?
Can we have one thing that is just doing ok?
Government - fucked.
Education - fucked.
Healthcare - fucked.
Environment - fucked.
Housing - fucked.
Societal and Social Cohesion - fucked.
Wealth Inequality - fucked.
Personal Technological Autonomy - fucked, and under continuous attack.
Technological Enshittification - Running like gangbusters. So really - fucked.
Damn, someone give me some kind of ladder to climb out of this pit of despair.
