There is a lot of power to waste for the savings you made, when not buying expensive SSDs (20€ a year is not much). Where we use HDDs, we don’t care about noise. Durability? We use huge RAID systems with lots of redundancy.
I personally like to swap new drives after 5 years to avoid failures. So when you find a 16 TB SSD for 350€, you send me a message.

You just need a client like Element.io or other clients. If you don’t want to connect to the main server matrix.org which is quite slow, you choose one from the federation.
People who own a server and know how to do administration tasks can install their own instance and attach it to the federation. You can use one of the Matrix server applications for self-hosting.

Two different sources would need to be hacked. This is where I say, it’s hard and secondly someone would notice that hack very quickly.
Signing the ISO or the checksums with a well-known signature is still important. I verify it, if a signature available. It’s just a couple of seconds and doesn’t cost anything.

Of course, it’s better to use some frameworks for logging, especially because these verbose statements are often needed for assertions while unit testing the code. But it’s still equivalent to printf.
I use debugger sometimes. I actually like to load core dumps to take a look at the stack trace. But I usually don’t really need debugger interactively because when some error appears, I usually already have an idea what happened. And lots of embedded code needs timing in milliseconds, so debuggers won’t help.
Because if you invested a lot of time on carefully choosing the places where printf should be to get all the info you need, you just need to unset NDEBUG and voilà everything that you need is there again.
My HDDs run 24/7 without spin up btw. I’m just talking about the costs. My drives don’t fail that much as yours. The recent drives that failed were WD Blue that were very old and only used for backups. And yes, all backups were still readable, even the drive was reported as failed. Compare it to SSDs that often fail “spectacularly”.
