all ex-league players who i’ve spoken with (myself included) refer to league of legends and breaking free from it as if they were raised in a cult or dealing with life-ruining substance abuse that still affects them to this day

in case anyone is reading this looking for a solution the cable was not the culprit

nothing in between the computer and monitor - it’s just plugged straight in. my current guess is that some step of pacman’s install/update process changes something that also gets changed by something else (DE, config file, idk) after the boot.

could you elaborate?

i’ve been just dealing with this problem for an embarrassing amount of time now, and have gone through several version updates of the nvidia drivers with this problem persisting. i’ve also tried reinstalling the nvidia drivers with no change.

that’s worth checking - i don’t have a spare DP cable on hand to test, but you may be onto something.

previously, i tried unplugging and replugging the cable on the PC end, as well as trying other ports, to no avail.

just now, i tried replugging the end plugged into the monitor a few times and was able to reproduce the resolution issue a single time. this honestly just confuses me more though, because why would it happen only one time out of several cycles doing the exact same thing?

i’m gonna get another cable just to be sure but that wont be for a few days at least.

while i appreciate the effort, this has no effect on my issue. also maybe worth noting, i am using grub but not nomodeset. i toggled it on just to see if it would do anything but the problem persists.

if you look at my xrandr output on the first boot, the main problem is that it cannot see any other mode except 640x480 and running xrandr --output DP-0 --mode 1920x1080 fails. i cannot change it using plasma’s display settings gui or xrandr in any way - the only way i know how to get access to the other resolution/rate settings of that monitor is by rebooting.

the reason people say neofetch is useless is because the information it gives you is not very detailed when compared to something like inxi for example

i really like how this is just about the games. no corporations, no awkward presenters on a stage, just a bunch of cool games i would not have known about otherwise.

plus it seems like a lot of his time and energy is going into that and the topic is similar enough to his other videos that he might as well document it.

it really is crazy how different it feels to use a linux pc after being conditioned to think that windows is just how using a computer is. the way i relate it to my friends is that using windows feels like i’m constantly compromising with the computer, but using linux i own my computer and it works for me - not the other way around.

right - obviously when piracy is the only option then you get what you get and you need to do the legwork to make sure it’s safe.

i do take proper security precautions (at least i hope i do, i have a degree in it lol)

i more meant that i’d rather not deal with an executable i don’t trust at all since i’m lazy and generally trust the official sources more than the illegitimate ones.

i’m of the same mindset when it comes to pirating any executable - it really is just not worth the effort to me to go through the steps to ensure the file isn’t malicious, and a signature-based virus scan won’t catch everything.

i say something like this often in real life, but despite it being plainly observable in daily life other people still don’t agree.

it’s on all scales too, or at least it feels like it. moving everything to streaming, always online, etc. want to play a competitive video game with your friends? give a corporation root-level access to your home computer. ads everywhere some greedy ass in a suit can think to stick them whether you pay or not, yet everyone complies like this is normal and i get singled out for caring about our rights as consumers.

but this is a game that basically lives and dies by its mods, and this is an update that (arguably) changed nothing anyone who is still playing the game cares about after years of stability. why fix what isn’t broken?

fun is an overstatement but it can be enjoyable with a friend. definitely not as bad as some people make it out to be though
