  • Like the lesbian necromancers in space? I can see that. I love the Kushiel books but can tell they’re written by a woman.

In sort of alternate history fantasy where I think there is no jarring gender stuff:

I’ve been reading the Katherine Kerr Deverry books, they are old but I think you might like those. The YA ones starting with The Thief of Attolia, if you haven’t read those, is delightful, and doesn’t take much time. Robin Hobb, but you already found her, and definitely Naomi Novik as recommended by others. I like most all the Django Wexler books, he’s a dude but writes from both men’s and women’s perspectives seamlessly. Katherine Kerr, Robin Hobb, and Naomi Novik write from the perspective of non-human characters too, that might be something to look for when you are looking for a writer who can change perspectives.

  • I make this for my kids in the summer and I think it’s about 1/5 coffee to water by volume not weight. It comes out so smooth and strong. Closer to an espresso in strength, good undiluted but better diluted.

I sub it for espresso in cold drinks - there is this weird one supposed to be made with fresh orange juice, espresso and fizzy water, recipe had a lot of advice about not shocking the espresso but it’s so much easier and better with cold brew. Cocktails too. Shaken with ice, delicious.

  • I care more about real milk in coffee than the coffee, up to a point - there is coffee so bad it can’t be redeemed. So your powdered creamer offends me more than your powdered coffee, lol. Good instant coffee is probably not past that line. My husband drinks instant coffee, I use his as an ingredient in things but don’t love it as coffee. It’s better than the work pods though.

AFA sweet bread - I made a sourdough babka this weekend and can most highly recommend this dough for sweet breads, it was amazing. So good my penultimate child (who takes Adderall so not much appetite) took one bite and immediately cut herself three slices.

  • Google assistant was already a good listener, it seems to have gotten worse, but compared to anything else I’ve tried to do with voice it was & is still the best at understanding, and can be set to be bilingual.

I honestly don’t understand this but it’s very Google to push the change before the replacement is fully baked. They did that with YouTube Music too.

  • We actually pay for all our kids’ phone service because T-Mo let us add them for $10/month each line. If they raise it 5 per line it will add quite a bit but I think I’d just ask the kids to pay their $15 a month then, or spin them off if they prefer, and save money overall, T-Mobile has already saved us thousands of dollars over the years, improving service without raising the price so they have a little bit of loyalty from me. It may get shitty from now but it’s been a good run for 15 years at least.

  • I’m GenX and since computers used to need more work, and my career followed the rise of computer software, I like messing with it. I am still often tech support for my millennial age kids, but the younger set (high school and college now) are outpacing me, especially the 19 year old. I maintain the home network but the 19 year old sails the seas for content, never needs my help with anything tech related, and can often help her older sisters with their questions now.

I would say the difference between us is that the younger ones seem to believe everything will work by itself, I believe most things can be fixed (and am delighted when it just works), the middle ones do not believe either of those things.
