Kinda to glad I was able to move up my plans to build a new PC right when I heard we actually went through with the tariff plan.

AI is a tool, Ashish is 100% correct in that it may do some things for developers but ultimately still needs to be reviewed by people who know what they’re doing. This is closer to the change from punch cards to writing code directly on a computer than making software developers obsolete.

Honestly, I just ask if they can solve FizzBuzz. It shows me how they approach problems, how they communicate their process, and that they know basic programming concepts. The rest of the interview just kinda tells me if I’d get along with them as a person. Most other things, good and bad, only show up over time.

Then again, I work with software that isn’t exceptionally complex.

Part of me is wanting to put that new PC build I just started saving for on a credit card instead.

I understand sentiment after seeing how a lot of tech companies are. The other side of it is this: Developers still have bills to pay. FOSS projects are great, especially if they’re done by a small team and have a supportive community, but there are only a limited number of developers who have a combination of knowledge, skill, free time, and financial capability to truly dedicate themselves to FOSS projects.

If I could support myself by coding for FOSS projects, I would probably try (hell I just might not be aware of opportunities for this) but that isn’t the reality in front of me.

Which means twice the savings when you unexpectedly lay them both off!

They’ll see the sales of the Charger tank and will conclude that people just don’t want muscle cars, which is sad because in the next few years I was thinking about getting one.

Oh well, what can you do.

See, I’ve had a similar experience getting games to run on Debian. Steam games crash and require research and testing to see if I can even get them to run, having some in-game videos just not play, black screens, and games just kinda freezing are all super common for me. That’s just when trying to run games via Proton.

I get some of it can be tied to a skill issue on my part, but at the end of the day I’m tired and don’t want to spend what little free time I have tinkering to get a game working, at least most days.

Still, my dislike for Windows 11 outweighs my interest in gaming so Debian stays.

The only slight difference is that they just want you to get any job, so they might push you to a job you don’t really want.

A decent recruiter should push you towards any job they think you’ll do well at. They want to build relationships with companies and maintain a good relationship. They might not always be knowledgeable about skill sets and quirks of every industry, however.

There are a few who will just push anyone to any job but they tend to be easy to weed out and either don’t last long or find a very specific niche where they can get away with that behavior.

I mean fark.com is still kicking, last I checked. I feel like some of these old sites are the web equivalent of BIFL products.

I’d guess “To whom it may concern” would be the most gender neutral/inclusive way to rephrase that.

To be fair, most people who try to copy success fail.

If you’ve got interest in deep simulation mechanics you can check out Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. It’s FOSS and, last I checked, still has an active developer community.

What is your issue with DEI?

I mean some of them did, probably. It’s a diverse group, can’t really lump everyone together outside of being not straight and/or not cis.

I know it’s a bit off topic, but is PlanetSide 2 approachable for new players still? I loved the original and tried the sequel when it came out but didn’t get much of a chance to play it. I’d be interested in giving it a shot

I was looking into Rust a few months ago and noticed that most jobs listed seemed to be Web 3, crypto scams. It doesn’t seem to be in high demand, from the corporate side of things.

Maybe it’s the interests I have, but those chat rooms may have people but not a lot of activity. Also, the specific people I want to chat with don’t use Matrix.

Depending on when you played the UI changed to be more mouse friendly. Still a game that is keyboard driven but it does have solid mouse based controls as well.
