Heliborne? Not played it in years now, I think another dev took over and rebuilt it for some reason and everyone hated it but the they made the original version available as well. No idea the current state of the game.

So the game is plastered in advertising, that sounds even worse. Seriously I just want to buy a good game. Factorio is a good example of that.

Runescape back in the day did it pretty well, F2P with a single optional subscription. This model is pretty much dead at this point though.
I kinda agree, but generally find F2P games would have been better as a paid game without the premium shop.
Discord is more of a chat room than a forum though, lemmy is a federated alternative to forums.

Wouldn’t something like this be potentially quite useful if you live in an area that could easily see a natural disaster that results in weeks without a connection to the outside world? Sure you could build a raspberry pi to do it yourself but not everyone is capable of doing that and its also a low power consumption device which is useful to keep your backup power going longer, ideally through a battery as a generator normally doesn’t do very low wattage efficiently. Solar is variable and lower power demands means you can go smaller, or helps keep it more reliable.
I find prepper stuff has a fine line between reasonable preparation for something that may well happen and then you get into the crazies that think the world is ending and they are actually going to achieve anything in such a situation beyond dying alone.
As I live in the UK the most likely disaster is a couple cm of snow which will break most infrastructure, shops will run out of things like milk and bread for days. This happened a few years ago, I had to resort to making tortillas instead for my lunch.
So your data storage is limited by how fast you can transmit it multiplied by the return trip around the black hole. Like an eternally rotating tape.
I started using Linux as my only OS when I was like 15 or so, at the time largely playing Runescape or EVE Online.
Still feel nostalgia for runescape sometimes but then remember the grind, no thanks. EVE is similar too, remember the great times in a fleet but if I go back I then am reminded of all the dull times when not much is happening and I find PvE is so fucking boring in EVE. Even a few things that are fun for half an hour are painfully tedious after 4, and sometimes there isn’t even a fleet forming up that day. Albion online I find a similar issue with. I don’t really care about solo PvP either.
Can’t really say Linux has shaped what I play that much as I have pretty much always been using it since I was making choices of what game to play beyond being limited to the games my dad had bought CDs for.

And if tech people are no longer recommending it, or actively recommending against it, it is possible to get people to start switching. This is largely how chrome became so popular in the first place, and that required getting people to change from the default option.
