So if you report a content for being racist, that’s against the rules.

Here’s how you train a neural network AI: you arrange a whole lot of neurons, you reinforce the connections between the neurons when it succeeds, and you weaken the connections when it fails. That’s the same way your brain works. When you eat food or have sex or do something else beneficial to survival, your neural connections are strengthened. An ANN AI is driven by its training directive just like you’re driven to eat or have sex. It develops the same biases.

This is nonsense. Humans invented the horse drawn wagon. Is a wagon ever going to develop critical thinking? No. AI isn’t a child with boundless potential, it’s a tool, just like a wagon. If humans want AI to have critical thinking, they’re going to have to build it. And no human has ever succeeded at that yet. The AI that Reddit is using does not have it. And since the AI is a profitable tool in its current state, it will probably not be improved to the level of a human.

I think maybe you’re under the impression that computers run on perfect logic. Machine learning systems actually run on pure instinct. You are more capable of logical reasoning than an ML program is. You’re less capable than a traditional algorithmic program, but you’re more capable than an AI.

What happens when a community of colour is full of people who don’t have the same conversational norms as white people, and the bot thinks they’re harassing each other? What happens when a neurodivergent community talk to each other in a neurodivergent way? Autistic people often get called “robotic”, will the AI feel the same way and ban them as bots? What happens when an AI is used to moderate a trans community, and flags everything as NSFW because its training data says “transgender” is a porn category?

Donald Trump has not been diagnosed with NPD by a licensed psychiatrist who had an interview with him. That is the requirement to say that a person has NPD. Currently, there is no clinically valid evidence that Trump is a narcissist. To say otherwise would be medical malpractice.

It’s not because of the colour of their skin. Black people don’t literally have black skin, white people don’t literally have white skin, Indians and Latines aren’t black, and Asians aren’t white. If you look at the average black person and see black skin, literally black skin, then your perceptions have been distorted by racism.

I would follow a similar logic for blackness if blackness had been created by black slavers who were using it to define themselves as better than everyone else and to justify slavery of nonblack people. However, that isn’t what happened. Black people didn’t choose to be black. They were kidnapped onto boats and told they were black. They were isolated from their native cultures and shoved into plantations with strangers from halfway across Africa who had no language, culture, or religion in common. They sure as shit didn’t want to be black, they wanted to go back to the way things were before. But blackness is the only thing their children grew up knowing.

Is blackness fake? Yes. Is identifying as black a declaration of supremacy? No.

I got banned for racism against white people earlier this year, but I appealed it and they unbanned me. That’s because I explained I wasn’t attacking the people who are labelled as white, I was attacking the label of whiteness itself. Whiteness was invented by trans-atlantic slave traders in order to justify what they were doing and create solidarity between europeans in the new world as they oppressed nonwhite people and enjoyed the privileges of oppressing together. It’s perfectly reasonable to attack the idea of whiteness as a big load of baloney. Also, any person who feels attacked by attacks on whiteness obviously considers whiteness part of their identity, which is shitty because, again, whiteness is fake. Yeah, I haven’t used Lemmy in a month because this site is more transphobic than Reddit. I’ll be here more now that Reddit isn’t an option, but it’s not like I think this place is good either. Lemmy needs to step up its game.

Oh yeah I don’t allow that sort of thing. I let people be harder on me as a leader than I’d let them be to people I’m responsible for protecting. If I’m to be worthy of power within a community then I have to be willing and able to advocate for the community. That means taking zero tolerance towards attacks on others, and embodying the community’s best values to the face of those who disagree. I always give troublemakers clear requirements for remaining in the community if that’s what they want. Protest is essential to social health, but it must be done without hate, and it’s better for animosity to be directed towards leaders than members.

You and I have very different ideas about the moral responsibilities of people in authority. I think it’s essential that leaders be held to a higher standard in all cases.

Protest is a fundamental part of a functioning government, a functioning society, and a functioning community. I’ve been a mod on queer forums, and I always gave people a way to argue their case so long as they were engaging in respectful debate. I would tell people the boundaries and make sure they followed them. For example, if someone wants to say I’m not really nonbinary, I’ll argue the point with them because it’s my duty as a community leader, but I will establish they must gender me correctly and not use slurs for the duration of the debate, even if they disagree. They’re welcome to make their disagreement while respecting me, and usually they couldn’t manage that balance and I banned them. They would run out of patience before I did. It is absolutely essential that community moderators have an abundance of patience.

You shouldn’t have been banned permanently. I think the appropriate duration of ban for that kind of fatphobia is a month.

Scientists have well documented the negative effects of stress and shame on health outcomes. Positive pressure to get motivated and improve one’s health can be effective. But mean-spirited speech, insults, and shaming or blaming statements do not, statistically, have positive outcomes. They’re more likely to result in stress eating, panic attacks, and depression, all of which increase your risk of heart disease. The idea that fat shaming works is pseudoscientific misinformation, and if you look at the consequences scientifically, it promotes an unhealthy lifestyle. Fat shaming does work for SOME people, but on average, it will make people less healthy. It’s not supported by doctors or scientists. They would recommend more positive and encouraging ways to help someone lose weight, not just slinging insults.

So when we’re talking about hateful pseudoscience, banning people who engage in that behaviour is appropriate, but I don’t think it should be permanent unless you’ve been fatphobic in the past.
