    • One Day by David Nicholls because it uses overlapping narratives and different perspectives to tell one story
    • The Dog Stars by Peter Heller because it uses a post apocalyptic backdrop to take you on an emotional journey with the characters
    • This Strange Eventful History by Claire Messud because its overlapping narratives over decades continually recolor events and motivations and outcomes
    • Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin because its three protagonists have their own stories to tell, but they are intertwined and dependent. -Same Bed, Different Dreams by Ed Park because the complex story structure lends itself to a powerful emotional journey for the protagonist and the reader

  • rysnc might be a faster and more reliable option. It can compress the files for transfer and does checksums after the transfer is complete

I used something like this to transfer 12 TB from offsite to onsite with zero failures

    rsync -arvzip --progress /path/to/host /path/to/destination

You can set up a screen and let this run in the background all the time

  • Honestly, I read the book 2 years ago. I rarely review books when I read them, but this book I took the time to write one.

Like I said, the academic linguistics side of this was fascinating. I still refer back to the lesson on translation the word ciao and how complex one word is. Before you even get to tone, content, sentence structure or any of the other complexities of language.

The magic side of it felt shoehorned into the book to make writing a conclusion easier. As you read it, imagine removing the magic and the plot is guided by less arcane happenings. How much could happen with just the bureaucracy, imperialism and capitalism?

Let alone… this is a world with literal magic. And history happened exactly as the real world? No difference except shellfish at a ball in the 1800s

  • In the 2000s and early 2010s, less of your life was lived on a cell phone or smartphone.

For kids now, it’s 100% of their lives. Post-COVID, the majority of social interaction between peers is through a social media app.

That means that close to 100% of kids are on their phones during the school day. If you aren’t, you run the risk of social isolation and FOMO.

Administrators can’t send a kid to detention for using their phone because ALL kids would be in detention every day.

Here’s one article that examines the problem

Have you tried The Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe?

It is a compelling blend of science fiction and fantasy, following the journey of Severian, an exiled torturer, through a richly imagined and decaying future Earth. The series is renowned for its intricate world-building, philosophical depth, and lyrical prose.

In contrast to LOTR, The Book of the New Sun presents a morally complex and enigmatic world, where the boundaries between right and wrong are often blurred.

Compared to “Game of Thrones,” “The Book of the New Sun” offers a more introspective and surreal narrative, where reality itself is questioned.
