If you are an Android, why not just use LibreTube?

In my particular case: because I still need to sync my subscriptions and playlists, as well as the support for adding comments.

You can create an account on a Piped instance and use it to log in to LibreTube. That way, you can sync your subscriptions and playlists. The only thing you can’t do is comment.

Note to self, see if I can self-host Piped

You can. It’s pretty easy. That’s exactly what I do.
